  • Live-aboard Coxswain Course

This Coxswain course takes place onboard SV Starsand, a 20 m commercial sailing ship.

This vessel is ideally suited to the task of onboard commercial training.

This course has been designed to be as hands on as possible, assessment is mostly done through “on the job” observations and oral questioning.

You will be part of the working crew of the vessel, standing watches, navigating, maintaining and monitoring machinery, anchoring and cooking at sea.

This course is real, not in a classroom and no endless assignments. If you want to work at sea, lets learn at sea. Hands on, minds on.

The course is 10 days. Broken into two 5 day blocks. You will be living on the ship.

Week 1 starts with a shore day where we cover survival craft and survival at sea techniques and firefighting. You will stay onboard the ship night one. The remaining 4 days are spent at sea.

Week 2 starts with a small craft skills day where you will learn to become competent in handling small power-driven vessels. The remaining 4 days are spent at sea.

You will graduate with the MAR20321 Certificate 2 in Maritime Operations course completion certificate.

We will also complete you AMPA (mandated practical assessment) during the course.

You will also be sitting the Short-Range Operators Certificate of Proficiency VHF Radio Licence.

At the completion of the course, you will receive a letter and a form 771 for 10 days commercial sea time. (This is enough sea time to apply for a Coxswain Grade 2 certificate)

All you need to add to be ready to apply to AMSA for your “Coxswain Certificate of Competency” is a medical certificate and your Sea time.

Our trainers are all highly qualified and experienced and will make sure you step off the vessel as a competent and practical mariner.

Places are capped at 10 students per course.

    COST:

Coxswain Course fee $2900, AMPA $490, Radio Licence $285, Live-Aboard Cost $1325 (Food, Board, Fuel, Sea Time: $135/day) $500Gst
